A BETTER BRIEF

Planning your handyman services project

Small repairs, one clear task list

Handyman projects can include furniture assembly, shelving, cabinet hardware, interior door adjustments, trim touch-ups and small drywall repairs. Describe each task separately, its location and the result you want. A task list makes it easier to confirm whether one provider can handle the visit or a specialist is needed.

What to include in your request

Tell us your city and postal code, the number of items or rooms, approximate dimensions, access restrictions and preferred timing. Note whether materials are already on site. For assembly, include the product model and whether instructions and parts are complete. For mounting, describe the item’s weight and wall surface; the provider must confirm safe fixing methods on site.

Repairs versus underlying problems

A sticking door, cracked patch or recurring stain can be a symptom of a larger issue. Explain when it started, whether it is getting worse and any previous repairs. Do not cover recurring moisture damage before its cause is assessed. Structural changes, gas equipment, significant plumbing work and electrical work need an appropriate specialist rather than a general repair assumption.

Keep electrical work with the right contractor

Do not assume a handyman can perform electrical installation or repairs. Check Ontario Electrical Safety Authority guidance and confirm the contractor’s authorization for the proposed work. For load-bearing wall changes or suspected structural movement, seek a qualified assessment before approving removal or repairs.

Compare the whole visit, not just an hourly rate

Ask whether the estimate includes a minimum visit charge, materials, shopping time, disposal, parking and return visits. Clarify which tasks are fixed-price and which depend on conditions found on arrival. Request written approval before extra work. CityVerified does not publish invented local rates or guarantee an estimate.

Finish with a documented scope

Confirm the agreed task list, exclusions, cleanup, payment schedule and workmanship terms directly with the provider. For rental or condominium properties, check owner or building approval and access rules before booking. Submission is free; providers may pay CityVerified for introductions. A request does not confirm a contractor, appointment or response time.

Jobs to describe in your request

What changes the cost?

Use these factors to compare the scope of proposals. A total price alone does not show whether the same work is included.

Ask for a written description of included work, exclusions, payment stages and how additional work is authorized. Confirm who supplies materials and what documentation or warranty terms you receive at completion.

Official resources

Check these sources and confirm requirements for your property with the responsible authority. Guidance is a starting point, not a property-specific assessment.

Before you submit

Does CityVerified perform this work?

No. CityVerified collects requests and connects customers with independent businesses. Confirm scope, price and availability directly with the provider.

Will my request be matched immediately?

Our team reviews requests. Provider coverage and availability are confirmed during follow-up. A request is not a confirmed match or booking.

What affects the project cost?

Factors include task count and complexity, wall or surface condition, materials and purchasing, minimum visit charge, access, parking and disposal. Ask for an itemized written scope; CityVerified does not publish an invented price estimate.

With your consent, CityVerified may contact you and share request details with relevant providers. Providers may pay for introductions. Read the privacy details.
