A BETTER BRIEF
Planning your attic insulation project
Assess before insulating
Ask how the contractor checks for moisture, air leaks and existing insulation condition. Adding insulation over a damp or leaky attic traps problems.
Air seal first
Top plates, recessed lights, exhaust fans and penetrations should be sealed before insulation goes in. Ask whether air sealing is included in the scope or priced separately.
Confirm ventilation
Attic ventilation (soffit and ridge or gable vents) must remain functional. Blocking vents causes ice dams and moisture damage. Ask how the proposal preserves airflow.
Jobs to describe in your request
- Blown-in fiberglass
- Blown-in cellulose
- Spray foam
- Batt installation
- Air sealing and insulation combo
What changes the cost?
Use these factors to compare the scope of proposals. A total price alone does not show whether the same work is included.
- Attic area
- Existing insulation condition
- Material type
- Air sealing scope
- Access and height
Ask for a written description of included work, exclusions, payment stages and how additional work is authorized. Confirm who supplies materials and what documentation or warranty terms you receive at completion.
