A BETTER BRIEF
Planning your windows project
Describe the opening and symptoms
Record how many windows are involved, where they are located and whether the concern is operation, drafts, visible damage or a renovation. Identify whether you want an existing opening retained or changed. Measurements provided with a request are preliminary; the installer should verify before ordering.
Compare installation scope
Ask whether the proposal is an insert or full-frame installation and what happens to trim, flashing, sealing and finishes. Request the product specifications and explain the outcome you want. Condensation or comfort problems may also involve ventilation or the building assembly, so ask what the provider has actually assessed.
Check opening changes and handover
Toronto’s permit guidance distinguishes certain same-opening replacements from new, relocated or enlarged openings. Confirm your project with the relevant municipality before ordering. Agree on disposal, protection, cleanup, operating instructions and which party handles product versus installation warranty issues.
Jobs to describe in your request
- Window replacement
- Window installation
- Opening assessment
- Installation and finish scope
What changes the cost?
Use these factors to compare the scope of proposals. A total price alone does not show whether the same work is included.
- Number and size of openings
- Product specifications
- Insert versus full-frame scope
- Access and finishing
Ask for a written description of included work, exclusions, payment stages and how additional work is authorized. Confirm who supplies materials and what documentation or warranty terms you receive at completion.
