A BETTER BRIEF
Planning your interlocking project
Define the area and pattern
Describe the space, intended use (vehicles, foot traffic), drainage slope and any existing surface to be removed. Note transitions to lawn, concrete or asphalt.
Ask about the base
Request a written explanation of excavation depth, granular base, compaction and edge restraints. A thin base over poor soil fails quickly regardless of stone quality.
Confirm drainage and maintenance
Ask how water will shed, whether polymeric sand or jointing compound is included, and what maintenance the contractor recommends.
Jobs to describe in your request
- Interlocking driveway
- Walkway installation
- Patio
- Pool surround
- Base repair and re-laying
What changes the cost?
Use these factors to compare the scope of proposals. A total price alone does not show whether the same work is included.
- Area and pattern complexity
- Base depth and soil condition
- Removal of existing surface
- Drainage requirements
- Edge restraints and jointing
Ask for a written description of included work, exclusions, payment stages and how additional work is authorized. Confirm who supplies materials and what documentation or warranty terms you receive at completion.
